The Morning Sings
January 1, 2020
Cool and Sunny
This morning, the first morning of 2020, as I was standing in the kitchen looking out the window to the apartment building next door, Cat Stevens’ beloved song, “Morning Has Broken” suddenly started playing in my mind. I have not heard that song for many years, but all of sudden, there it was –
“Morning has broken, like the first morning,
Blackbird has spoken, like the first bird,
Praise for the singing,
Praise for the morning,
Praise for them springing
Fresh from the world.”
Although I could only see a cement apartment building and there were no birds to sing, I was suddenly on the edge of the world, flooded with rose-colored clouds and a joyful chorus of birds, the glorious beginning of a new day.
I realized there is no reason I cannot start every day this way, with connection to the beauty of the universe. I know the song – I can sing it myself every morning. It doesn’t matter where I am. The beauty of the morning will always unfold to me – if I allow it.
Those of us who live in places of natural beauty do not have to produce beauty from our own souls, but we who live in cities have the wonderful opportunity of creating it from within ourselves. So, blessings to Cat Stevens and other poets, artists and musicians who show us the way. It would make me very happy if some of you felt inspired to join me in starting your day with “Morning Has Broken”.
May we all have a new decade of deepening love, which binds the universe and everything in it together.
Happy New Year,
